Did you know that chiropractic is not just for adults?  Drs. Lander and Schaffer are both skilled in treating children, whether it is an infant a few hours old or a teenager and everything in between.  We are often asked "why would a child need to be adjusted?"  Read on for the answer!

1.    Many spinal problems seen in adults begin as early as birth. Even so called "natural" birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nervous system. The resulting irritation caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nervous system stress. Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sitting, crawling, and walking are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

2.    As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nervous system will adversely affect the body's ability to function at its best.

3.    Trauma from an old injury. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is important to better health.

4.    Care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few).  It is important to understand that the Doctor of Chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor lies in checking the child's spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves' ability to transmit this vital information.

5.    The nervous system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.

What to expect on your child's visit:

The Doctor of Chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child's developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

Wouldn't it be great if we could all receive a massage on a daily basis?  Obviously that is next to impossible for most of us.  Since massage is vital to the health of your musculoskeletal system as well as to your mental health here are some great tips for getting the most out of the massages that you are able to fit into your schedule and budget.

Make the Most from Every Massage!

Massage can be a powerful tool to help your body best perform its countless functions in its goal to maintain a healthy balance. Why not do everything you can to get the best possible results from every massage session?

Before your session
  • Put life events on hold
  • Take a relaxing bath or shower before your appointment time
  • Limit consumption of caffeine and sugar, as well as other stimulants
  • Avoid eating immediately before your appointment
  • Allow extra time in your schedule so you don't have to rush to be ready for your session. Otherwise, it may take longer to reach a relaxed state.
During your session

  • Share what's going on: If you have a tender spot or an injured area, bring it up so it can be addressed. If you feel you need more pressure or a lighter touch during the session, please say so.

  • Specify your preferences. Everyone has different needs and wants, so share yours! Is everything in the massage environment okay? The temperature? The lighting? Any other distractions? Are you completely at ease? Do you like certain music? Is the volume okay?  Do you want more time spent on a certain area? Each session is especially for you, so please communicate about what you want! If there is anything you don't understand, please ask so we can discuss it.

  • Let it all go and relax! One of the major massage goals for many people is to lessen tension and stress. Many of those aches and pains that demand our attention are linked to stress. In fact - according to Dr. Sandra McLanahan - eighty percent of disease is stress-related, so maximizing the relaxation in each session should help you to maintain a much higher level of well-being!
  • One way to quiet your mind is to focus your attention on the session - really get in tune with your sense of touch.
  • Proper breathing helps you to relax and to reach your session goals. Slow, deep breathing (from the gut) will provide your body with much-needed oxygen, while signaling your body to let go of its tensions.
After your session
  • If at all possible, allow for some quiet time before you continue your busy life.
  • Drink extra water!! Massage releases waste products and toxins from your muscles. Increasing your fluid intake lowers this toxicity and lessens the strain on filtering organs.
  • Schedule your next appointment! When you make bodywork a regular part of your life, you are helping your body to maintain a better state of balance. In the long run, you stand to enjoy much better health gains through consistent sessions.

Nothing is more important than your well-being, so make taking care of yourself a high priority. When you feel your best, you are in a much better condition to deal with all of life's challenges and demands.

Hopefully, this list has given you at least a couple of helpful hints. If you have any questions regarding your massage and bodywork sessions or your health, feel free to ask.

Wishing you the most out of your next massage,

Sincerely,

The Grand Health Chiropractic & Wellness Team

Judging by the sniffles I keep hearing in the treatment rooms, I would say that cold and flu season is upon us!  Since my goal is to keep all of you as healthy as possible, I put together a list of things that boost your immune system. Also included is a list of things that decrease your immune system--so that you can make some healthy choices!

Immune System Weakeners:

  • Sugar (including juice, white bread, and soda): sugar interferes with the body's ability to absorb needed nutrients - especially Vitamin C
  • Lack of sleep: most people need 8 or more hours each night
  • Dairy (doesn't necessarily weaken your immune system but does cause excess mucus production, so should be avoided if you actively have a cold)
  • General lack of nutrition
  • Smoking: depletes your body of Vitamin C and other antioxidants
  • Stress: There is lots of biochemistry behind this one, but let's keep it simple.  Stressharms the immune system through the inability of the body to respond to certain hormonal signals thus making you susceptible to illness.

Immune System Boosters:
  • Chiropractic adjustments (adjusting the thoracic spine stimulates your immune system)
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Kombucha
  • Lots of fresh vegetables and fruit
  • Water!  (shoot for 1/2 your body weight in ounces each day, more if you drink caffeinated beverages)
  • Probiotics - 80% of your lymph tissue surrounds your gut.  A healthy gut = a strong immune system!  Look for dairy-free sources.
  • Exercise: The amount of exercise required to obtain an immune boost is relatively low, 20 minutes of brisk walking 4-5 times per week has been shown to significantly improve the body's immune response.

As always, if you have any questions or want further explanation, just ask!

Wishing you and your family Grand Health this cold and flu season,

Sincerely,

Dr. Kristin Schaffer, DC and The Grand Health Chiropractic & Wellness Team

I hope you all had a wonderful and healthy Labor Day weekend!.  Vacation time is always a fun time for me to try out new recipes or workouts.  Call me weird, but I like to spend my time off from work restoring and renewing my body and mind.  While relaxing with my family over the long weekend I made this kale salad.  Since it took me all of 2 minutes and was absolutely delicious, I knew I had to share it with you all.

Ingredients:

  • 4 small organic kale leaves
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 can of tuna
  • 1 small organic apple
  • Handful of organic raspberries
Wash and pat dry the kale, tear out the center stem and rip into small pieces placing them in a medium sized bowl.  Squeeze about half of a lemon over the kale and throw in a dash of salt.  Next gently rub (or in my case, hastily scrunch because you are so hungry it's about to get ugly) the kale leaves together  The lemon and salt help to "cook" the kale, making it tender and less bitter than raw kale, but still keeping all the essential nutrients of the raw kale.  Dice half an avocado into the mix and use your hands to squash it into the kale leaves.  This will make a creamy base for your salad.

Now you have your salad base.  Feel free to add whatever you'd like to it.  I added a can of my favorite sustainably caught, low mercury tuna, a small diced apple, and a handful of raspberries.  I recommend adding at least one sweet or tart fruit to cut the bitterness of the kale and add some more flavor.  The possibilities are endless, experiment, have fun, and ENJOY!!!
